Office space in Glasgow

Located on the west coast of Scotland in the Central Belt, Glasgow is one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan and vibrant cities.

Glasgow is renowned for its hospitality which is reflected in the diverse range of businesses working in the city. It welcomes everyone from blue chip companies and global organisations, to international SMEs and entrepreneurs looking for exciting new possibilities.

Outside of London, Glasgow is recognised as having the largest urban rail network with services travelling from its two main stations, Queen Street and Central Station. Travelling to London takes just over 4 hours, while commuters can journey in from Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and the Western Highlands.

Glasgow International airport is located 8 miles west of the city centre, with a journey time of only 90 minutes to London. Along with the city’s extensive rail options, business owners find it easy to conduct commercial activities at both national and international level.

 

Economy

As recently as 2017 Glasgow was responsible for generating over £41 billion Gross Value Added (GVA) and plans are in place to further strengthen its economic success.

The Glasgow Economic Strategy launched in 2016 with the aim of making Glasgow the most productive major city economy in the UK by 2023. Part of the plan also includes the creation of 50,000 new jobs by this date.

There are approximately 50,000 businesses currently operating in Glasgow, producing just under 900,000 jobs. Over a 5 year period between 2012 and 2017, the number of new companies working in the city increased by almost 26%, which is a higher rate than anywhere else in the UK.

Over 50,000 people are employed in the financial services, IT and business services sector in Glasgow. It remains the third largest financial centre and remains firmly entrenched in the top 50 city rankings produced each year.

Almost 30,000 people work in the tourist industry in Glasgow, which has played a key role in the city’s continued economic resurgence. The 2014 Commonwealth Games welcomed over a million visitors to the city and the success of the global event continues to be expanded upon today.

 

Which businesses operate in Glasgow city centre?

Like many other major cities in the north of the UK, the manufacturing sector is no longer the main contributor to the local economy. The financial and business services sector in Glasgow now leads the way, followed closely by the likes of biosciences, healthcare, retail and tourism, creative industries and higher education.

The financial district is known as the International Financial Services District (IFSD) and is located to the west of the city centre. Alongside many of the major names in banking and investment, some of the world’s largest insurance firms also have a strong presence in this area.

Tourism plays a big part in Glasgow’s economic success, with business tourism in particular adding over £1 billion since 2005. Over one in five hotel beds sold in Glasgow go to conference delegates, which underlines how important the events industry is to the region.

An increased focus is being placed on the ‘Glasgow BioCorridor’ which stretches from the BioCity development in Lanarkshire, to research institutes, universities, hospitals and the GlaxoSmithKline site in nearby Irvine. Glasgow has a strong reputation around the world for its work in this sector and future investment will only cement this further.

Art and culture plays a big part in the city’s popularity, with sites like Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Gallery of Modern Art, The Theatre Royal and the Glasgow School of Art all located here. The city is also home to two of Europe’s most prestigious football clubs – Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers.
